Call to Silence and Opening Meditation:

A Reading from the Gospel of Mary:

"Be on your guard so that no one deceives you by saying, 'Look over here!' or 'Look over there!' For the child of true Humanity exists within you. Follow it!                                                           (Karen King translation)

“The Lord is in me, the Lord is in you, as life is in every seed, put false pride away and seek the Lord within.”
                                                                                                                                        ―
Kabir

We Were Made For These Times
My friends, do not lose heart.  We were made for these times.  I have heard from so many recently who are deeply and properly bewildered.  They are concerned about the state of affairs in our world now. Ours is a time of almost daily astonishment and often righteous rage over the latest degradations of what matters most too civilized, visionary people.  You are right in your assessments.  The lustre and hubris some have aspired to while endorsing acts so heinous against children, elders, everyday people, the poor, the unguarded, the helpless, is breathtaking.  Yet, I urge you, ask you, gentle you, to please not spend your spirit dry by bewailing these difficult times.   Especially do not lose hope.  Most particularly because, the fact is that we were made for these times. Yet, for years, we have been learning, practicing, been in training for and just waiting to meet on this exact plain of engagement.
I grew up on the Great Lakes and recognize a seaworthy vessel when I see one.  Regarding awakened souls, there have never been more able vessels in the waters than there are right now across the world.  And they are provisioned and able to signal one another as never before in the history of humankind.  Lookout over the prow;   there are millions of boats of righteous souls on the waters with you.  Even though your veneers may shiver from every wave in this stormy roil, I assure you that the long timbers composing your prow and rudder come from a greater forest.  That long-grained lumber is known to withstand storms, to hold together, to hold its own, and to advance, regardless.
In any dark time, there is a tendency to veer toward fainting over how much is wrong or unmended in the world.  Do not focus on that.  There is a tendency, too, to fall into being weakened by dwelling on what is outside your reach, by what cannot yet be.  Do not focus there.  That is spending the wind without raising the sails.
We are needed, that is all we can know. And though we meet resistance, we more so will meet great souls who will hail us, love us and guide us, and we will know them when they appear.  Didn’t you say you were a believer?  Didn’t you say you pledged to listen to a voice greater?  Didn’t you ask for grace?  Don’t you remember that to be in grace means to submit to the voice greater?
Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach.  Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely.  It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good.
What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing.  We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale.
One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to standup and show your soul.  Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times.  The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire.  To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these – to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity. Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult, this is one of the strongest things you can do.  There will always be times when you feel discouraged.  I too have felt despair many times in my life, but I do not keep a chair for it.  I will not entertain it.  It is not allowed to eat from my plate.
The reason is this:  in my uttermost bones I know something, as do you.  It is that there can be no despair when you remember why you came to Earth, who you serve, and who sent you here.  The good words we say and the good deeds we do are not ours.  They are the words and deeds of the One who brought us here.  In that spirit, I hope you will write this on your wall:  When a great ship is in harbor and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt.  But that is not what great ships are built for.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            D                                                                                                     Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes

“Here's the thing, say Shug. The thing I believe. God is inside you and inside everybody else. You come into the world with God. But only them that search for it inside find it. And sometimes it just manifest itself even if you not looking, or don't know what you looking for. Trouble do it for most folks, I think.”
                                                                                                 Alice Walker, The Color Purple

“The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed; nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There it is!’ For, in fact the kingdom of God is among [within] you”.

                                                                                              Gospel of Luke

Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

Call to Conversation:

Closing:
     SOLO:    Where are you from?
UNISON:   We have come from the place where light is produced from itself.
               Where is that place?
It’s a mystery
But can you say you image the light?
Yes, indeed.  We carry the light within.
And the peace?
The peace.
How do you know of such light and such peace?
The sign is the feeling.
The sign is the movement from within.
The sign is the passion for the well-being of all.
What are your other signs?
Our recognitions of injustice and hatred and oppression throughout the globe
Of power races and violence that seem unending.
Can we turn those around?
We must seek to do so.
Are you willing to spread your light and your peace?
We are eager to spread it.
It spreads just as love spreads.
The kingdom spreads out on earth
Just as love spreads.
But some people are not aware of it.
Yet you are aware!
Yes, indeed.
We are aware of the light and the movement and the peace.
And we cannot stand back.
We will step forward
We will overcome the violence, the domination, the hatred
And spread love
Peace be with you.
Acquire my peace within.

Call to Silence and Opening Meditation

Opening Greeting
   Solo:       Peace Be With You
Unison:  Acquire My Peace Within You

Solo:  Today we welcome winter and honor the coming of the Winter Solstice. Since the festival of Samhain, the Earth has withdrawn into itself.  The darkness of the receding days is felt by all nature and humanity.  The deep wisdom of the unconscious brings forth spiritual insights.  It is a time to stop, look backward in inner reflection and look forward to a new active season as the Sun’s returning power brings increased daylight, growth and activity.
Opening Prayer
Solo:    In this prayer, we honor the fruitful darkness of our lives, the comforting, restful and nurturing darkness.
Dear Fruitful Ground of our Being, you turn the sun’s face away from us as you gather us into the darkness of winter.  You call us inside to the great fires in our hearts.  You ask us to warm the hands of hope in our secret souls.  You show us the heaven seeds that have been planted in our souls, and you remind us that heaven’s answers rest in the dark ground of our beings.
Unison:    We praise you, O Holy Darkness
Solo:    Dear Fruitful Ground of our Being, in the darkness you teach us to trust in what we cannot see, to hope for that which seems impossible, to have faith in the night of unknowing.  You reveal to us the necessity of patience and the holiness of waiting in the dark as we enter into solitude.
Unison:    We praise you, O Holy Darkness
Solo:   Dear Fruitful Ground of our Being, in the darkness you cover us with beauty the poetry of the moon and stars, the loveliness of nocturnal creatures who make music in the forest’s darkness, the mystery of silvery shadows.  You soften the days light to show us the light of night.  You give us the gift of rest and sleep.  You send us your night angel to close our tired eyes and breathe dreams and visions into our longing hearts.
Unison:   We praise you, O Holy Darkness
Solo:   Let us pray.
Unison:   O God, in the quiet darkness of this moment we search for the scred light that shines forth in our darkness.  Just as we find this light in you, O God, help us understand that deep in the recesses of our souls, the same light shines.  Thank you for all the things that grow in darkness.  To find the light we must go into the dark.  Go with us into all the dark places where we must travel.  Take away our fear of darkness.  Bea lantern for us that we may be lanterns for one another.

Readings
A reading from Psalm 46, verse 10 (Revised standard Version)
Be still, and know that I am God.
A Reading from The Circle of Life, by Joyce Rupp & Macrina Wiederkehr
Winter spirituality motivates us in our desire to touch that place within where we are wise beyond our years. That mysterious well-of-knowing so often hidden from our minds and hearts.  We are called away from the traffic and the noise, anything that would hinder our being.  The way to that holy space within is the way of surrender.  If we want to know God we must give up all our ideas about God and let the Holy One teach us from within.  If we want to know God we must be willing to sit in the darkness, consumed by our longing.  We will reach our well-of-knowing only when we have the courage to leap into the well-of-unknowing.  There in that place of unknowing the soul is taught to trust.  In that sacred space we learn to ask questions without needing answers. The question is part of the quest.

As we arrive at the dark winter time, we turn our thoughts to positive aspects of darkness.  We meditate on the fertile, unexplored, deep parts of our beings where so much creative energy awaits us.  The seed in the ground does not curse the darkness.
Like this seed, until we surrender to the One who awaits us, we will not feel at home in the darkness.  God is always waiting for us, inside.  If we can become silent enough, we can become aware of God.
Call to Conversation
Closing Dialogue
Solo:      Show us the light of your countenance, O God.
Unison:   Let us go forth into the world in love and peace, giving thanks to God for all creation.

CALL TO SILENCE AND OPENING MEDITATION

A MEDITATION ON THE SAINT DAY OF PHILLIP THE APOSTLE

There were three who always walked with the Lord: Mary, his mother, and her sister, and Magdalene, the one who was called his companion. His sister and his mother and his companion were each a Mary.  Faith receives, love gives.  No one will be able to receive without faith.  No one will be able to give without love.  Because of this, in order that we may indeed receive, we believe, and in order that we may love, we give, since if one gives without love, he has no profit from what he has given he who has received something other than the Lord is still a Hebrew.
The Gospel according to Phillip, Nag Hamadi Library, Translation by Wesley W.Isenberg

As for the Wisdom who is called “the barren,” she is the mother of the angel.  And the companion of the […] Mary Magdalene. […] loved her more than all the disciples, and used to kiss her often on her mouth.  The rest of the disciples […].  They said to him “Why do you love her more than all of us?”  The Savior answered and said to them, “Why do I not love you like her?  When a blind man and one who sees are both together in darkness, they are no different from one another.

When the light comes, then he who sees will see the light, and he who is blind will remain in darkness.”  The Lord said,
“Blessed is he who is before he came into being.  For he who is, has been and shall be.”

1)      But they grieved.  They wept greatly, saying. How shall we go to the Gentiles and preach the gospel of the Kingdom of the Son of Man?  If they did not spare Him, how will they spare us?
2)      Then Mary stood up, greeted them all, and said to her brethren, Do not weep and do not grieve nor be irresolute, for His grace will be entirely with you and will protect you.
3)      But rather, let us praise His greatness, for He has prepared us and made us into Men.
4)      When Mary said this, she turned their hearts to the Good, and they began to discuss the words of the Savior.
5)      Peter said to Mary, Sister we know that the Savior loved you more than the rest of woman.
6)      Tell us the words of the Savior which you remember which you know, but we do not, nor have we heard them.
7)      Mary answered and said, What is hidden from you I will proclaim to you.
8)      And she began to speak to them these words: I, she said, I saw the Lord in a vision and I said to Him, Lord, I saw you today in a vision.  He answered and sid to me,
9)      Blessed are you that you did not waver at the sight of Me, for where the mind is there is the treasure.
10)  I said to Him, Lord, how does he who sees the vision see it, through the soul or through the spirit?
11)  The Savior answered and said, He does not see through the soul nor through the spirit, but the mind that is between the two that is what sees the vision and it is […]

                       Opening Dialogue
A Song from the Manichaean Psalms of Heracleides

Mary, Mary, know me,
But do not touch [me]
[Dry] the tears from your eyes
And know that I am your master,
Only do not touch me,
For I have not yet seen my father’s face.
Your God was not taken away,
As you thought in your pettiness.
Your God did not die;
Rather he mastered [death].

I am not the gardener.
I have given, I have received…
I did [not] appear to you
Until I saw your tears and grief…for me.

Cast this sadness away
And perform this service.
Be my messenger to these lost orphans

Hurry with joy, go to the eleven,
You will find them on the bank of the Jordan.
The Traitor convinced them to fish
As they did earlier
And to lay down the nets.
In which they caught people for life.

Say to them, “Arise, let us go.
Your brother calls you.”
If they disregard me as brother,
Say to them, “It is your master,

If they disregard me as maser
Say to them, “It is your lord.”
Use all your skills and knowledge
Until you bring the sheep to the shepherd.

If you see that they do not respond,
Make Simon Peer come to you.

Say to him, “Remember my words,
Between me and you.  Remember what I said,
Between me and you, on the Mount of Olives.
I have something to say,
I have no one to whom to say it.”

Rabbi, my maser, I shall carry out your instructions
With joy in my heart.
I shall not let my heart rest,
I shall not let me eyes sleep,
I shall not let my feet relax
Until I bring he sheep to the field.

Glory to Mary,
Because she has listened to her master,
[and she]carried out his instructions with
The joy in her whole heart.
[Glory and] triumph to the soul of blessed Mary.
The Gospels of Mary   By Marvin Meyer, copyright 2004

                Reading

“When the soul had brought the third Power to naught, it went upward and saw the fourth Power.  It had seven forms.  The first form is darkness;   the second is desire;  the third is ignorance,  the fourth is zeal for death; the fifth is the realm of the flesh; the sixth is the foolish wisdom of the flesh;  the seventh is the wisdom of the wrathful person.  These are the seven Powers of Wrath.

“They interrogated the soul, ‘Where are you coming from, human-killer, and where are you going, space-conqueror?’
“The Soul replied, saying ‘What binds me has been slain, and what surrounds me has been destroyed, and my desire has been brought to an end, and ignorance has died.  In a [wor]ld, I was set loose from a world [an]d in a type, from a type which is above, and (from) the chain of forgetfulness which exists in time.  From this hour on, for the time of the due season of he aeon, I will receive rest i[n] silence.’”
After Mary had said these things, she was silent, since it was up to this point that the Savior had spoken to her.
Gospel of Mary Magdala, Text from the Papyrus Berolinensis

                   Closing Meditation

Excerpt from the Transcript of Mother Teresa’s Acceptance Speech, held on 10 December 1979 in the Aula of the University of Oslo, Norway

“As we have gathered here to thank God for this gift of peace, I have given you all the prayer for peace that St. Francis of Assisi prayed many years ago, and I wonder he must have felt the need what we feel today to pray for, I think, you have all that that paper?  We’ll say it together.”

“Lord, make me a channel of your peace, that where there is hatred, I may bring love’ that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; that where there is discord, I may bring harmony; that where thee is error, I may bring truth; that where there is doubt, I may bring faith; that where there is despair, I may bring hope, that where there are shadows, I may bring light; that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted; to understand, than to be understood; to love, than to be loved.  For it is by forgetting self, that one finds.  It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.  It is by dying that one awakens to eternal life.  Amen.”          Saint Francis of Assisi

Call to Silence and Opening Meditation

Opening Greeting

The Blessed One greeting them all, saying: Peace be with you – may my Peace arise and be fulfilled within you! Be vigilant, and allow no one to mislead you by saying: ”Here it is!” or “There it is!” For the child of true humanity exists within you.  Follow it!  Those who search for it will find it.

Celebrant:  Peace be with you.

All:  Acquire my peace within you.

·         A Reading from the Gospel of Mary

Mary said to them:  “I will now speak to you of that which has not been given to you to hear.  I had a vision of the Teacher, and I said to him: “Lord I see you now in this vision,” And he answered:  “You are blessed, for the sight of me does not disturb you.  There where the mind is lies the treasure.”

Then I said to him:  “Lord, when someone meets you in a Moment of vision, is it through the soul that they see, or is it through the Spirit? The Teacher answered:  “It is neither through the soul nor the spirit, but the mind between the two which sees the vision…”

Prayer – Al-‘Asma Al-Husna, “The Beautiful Names” (all together)

Holy One of One-Hundred Names,
Three of which are Compassion, Love, and Mercy,
We acknowledge our offenses against you and your creation.
In our attempts to be holy, too often we have listened to others
Instead of trusting our own God-given instincts.
We have accepted distorted images of women for so long
That we no longer recognize the godly goodness of our own voices.
We have tarnished the unique God-shaped image that you so tenderly created inside
    each one of us,
Female and male.
We confess that, at times, we have not loved you or our neighbors,
We have not loved ourselves or have we loved Creation.
We are rarely able to receive your all-encompassing love.
Instead of fanning the flames of your love in our midst,
Too often we have quenched the divine sparks.
Instead of allowing your Holy Breath to swirl around us freely, sometimes
We have tried to trap the breeze in a box to be used for our purposes.
We ask you to blow away the cobwebs of temptation and to blot out the stain of our
offenses.
We pray that your light may shine through us, and we may be all you created us to be.
We hope that we may reflect your Glorious Harmony in the world.
We ask this in your many names, O God of One Hundred Names.
Amen

A Celebration of the Divine Feminine

Celebrant:  We gather here to seek a new meaning, an ancient path and a forgotten truth.
We search for the Magdalene as we pray (the celebrant lights the candle):

(All say)
Our Lady Magdalene, holy and complete,
         Your mysteries are many,
         Apostle of the apostles,
         Blessed among women,
Kindle in me the spark of wisdom
Which guides from darkness into light.

Celebrant (lifting the bowl):  we share bread from an earthen bowl – bread, the essential nourishment;
Bread and bowl, gifts from the hearth.  We share it in love:

(All say)

Love is the key to unlock the secrets
         Of compassion, empathy and life.
I live to transcend this mortal coil
Through the power of perfect love.

(The celebrant offers the bowl to the person on the left, who takes a piece.  She/he then takes
The bowl and offers it to the one on her/his left.  Each holds the bowl as the next person takes a
Piece, so serving each other around the room)

Celebrant (Lifting the cup):  We share milk in a glass cup as we seek to honor the feminine within
Our souls, bodies and selves, and for our past, present and future:

(All say)

From the past, let me learn
For the present, let me live,
And for the future, let me strive.
May today be the holy benefactor of tomorrow.

(The celebrant offers the cup to the person on the left, who dips his/her bread, then takes
The cup and offers it to the next person, again serving each other around the room. All eat.  After a
Short pause, the celebrant lifts the candle)

(All say)
For so long as the truth burns
In my secret heart of hearts,
May I walk the path of faithfulness
         Toward the limitless light.

         Peace be with you

(The celebrant blows out the candle)

Let us Pray

Our Mother who art within us,
Each breath brings us to you.
Thy wisdom come,
Thy will be done,
As we honor your presence within us.
You give us this day all that we need.
Your bounty calls us to give and receive
All that is loving and pleasurable.
You are the courage that moves us to be true to ourselves
And we act with grace and power.
We relax into your cycles of birth,
Growth, death and renewal.
Out of the womb, the darkness, the void, comes new life.
For you are the Mother of All Things.
Your body is the Sacred Earth and our bodies.
Your love nurtures us and unites us all.
Now and forever more.    Amen.

Call to Conversation

Closing Prayer

O Gentle, O Kind, O Blessed Sophia,
Thy Children on earth call to thee.
We pray thee, Beloved Mother, to cast forth
Thy net of woven starlight.
Fling it wide across the ocean of the universe
And gather us home to the realms of Light.
May we be as loving and faithful as our venerable sister, Mary Magdalene,
May she never be forgotten, and may her name be eternally blessed.  Amen
